Dunes, Lobster Rolls and Head Winds... Oh My!!!

Just got back from a fabulous week on the Cape. We did a couple of bike rides while we were there. These pics are from a ride we did out to P-town and back. It was just over 37mi and we did it in about 3.5hrs (not including a little side trek onto a road called "Old King's Highway", which looked like a legit paved road on Google Maps... but turned out to be a dirt road and we would have had to hitch up covered wagons to get through... some "HIGHWAY"! Thanks a lot Google Maps).
We rode along the ocean and the bay at some parts, which was really pretty. When we got to P-Town we stopped for a lobster roll... yum! The ride back on Rt 6 was hilly and the head wind made it extra-challenging... suddenly the lobster roll didn't seem like such a good idea.
All in all a successful training ride.
Hey guys, 34 more days to go 'til the Ride.
Go Team Charlie!!

We put the "fun" in fundraising

Hey everyone, S & W Sports is catching up to us. They are less than $1000 behind us. We'd better get going again with more appeals to our friends and colleagues. I know, for me, there are still a bunch of people from my list who haven't given yet. Time for another reminder!

(btw, Polly now's your chance to get those sympathy donations!)

Route 117, I drink YOUR milkshake!

That's right, people. On Thursday I dominated the highways and byways of Lincoln and Wayland...in the rain, no less! I'm a sick, sick puppy. And a sore one. But, I do have to say it was a good ride. Check it:

Dad's commute

Today I finally got on my bike again after not riding all week (except briefly on Monday to NWH). I did pretty much the same ride as last Sunday except riding on the Watertown/Cambridge side of the Charles all the way both down and back.

As I was riding, I realized that this ride is very similar to the bike commute Dad used to do back in the 70s when he worked in Cambridge. I thought of the drawings we made of him riding his bike to work and I remembered that the one I drew was of him riding past what is now the Arsenal Mall but at the time was the actual arsenal building that was abandoned and had lots of broken windows. Here's a picture of me at the same spot where I drew him riding when I was little.

My first Boston ride

Well... I took a break from visiting mom in the hospital by doing a fairly short ride from Prescott Street to Harvard U. and back. I did not really know where I was going to go since I wasn't sure where there were paths and where the roads were ok to ride on. But it worked out pretty well.

There is a nice path along the Charles which I discovered the other morning at the end of Abermarle Rd. I took that into Watertown Square and then crossed over to Nonantum Road and rode by the skating rink (brings back memories!) That path was fine but then got very busy. Luckily as I was crossing some street near Harvard, I discovered that Memorial Dr. was closed to cars part of the way. So I crossed over to Cambridge and rode to the end of where it was closed.

Then I turned around and headed back but decided not to go the way I came. The paths were just too busy so I figured Greenough Blvd. wouldn't be very trafficy. It wasn't and it turned out that there was a bike lane from the Arsenal mall (whatever that road is behind there) all the way back to Watertown Square.

It was only 15 miles or so that I did but I was glad to be back on a bike. Also was very glad for my new white bike shirt (thanks Marge!) which was nice and cool!

Tomorrow I'm planning to ride over to the hospital to see mom since I bought a cheapo backpack at Target this afternoon. I scoped out a route that avoids West Newton on my last trip over there.
